Rowland Hall

April 5, 2012

Dear Kent and Andrea,

Congratulations! On behalf of the Admission Committee at Rowland Hall, I am pleased to offer Emily a spot in our 2PreK program for the fall of 2012.

We would be delighted to have Emily join our Beginning School community. She is a bright, cheerful and confident child. She was careful with the materials that Carol Blackwell shared with her during her visit. Emily has strong verbal skills and quite a vocabulary for a little one! With her cooperative nature and strong skill set, Emily would be a wonderful addition to our 2PreK program. We know that you are seeking a stimulating environment for her. As a school, we hope to offer children an abundance of experiences that will excite their imaginations as they learn to explore the world beyond their homes.

My Angel

Toddler play

This weekend I was able to observe my daughter Emily (22 months old) and my niece Amelia (26 months old) interact. This is the third time they've met, but the first time they played together. When Emily was 3 weeks old, she didn't even notice 3 month old Amelia. When they were both around 1, still not interested in each other. I use the term "play together" lightly, because just like all the books say - toddlers really don't play "together," they simply play "near" each other.

Family Visit August 2011

My sister and her family are in town this week, which gives Emily an opportunity to visit with her cousins Graham and Amelia. On Sunday morning we went for a walk at Jordan River Parkway. Then Sunday evening we went to Baba and Nana's for Graham's 8th birthday party. This is Emily with Baba, Amelia, and Graham giving a very charming speech at the end of the night thanking everyone for the party.

Fresh Strawberry Muffins

Today I made fresh strawberry muffins from scratch for the first time. Actually, this is the first time I've made muffins of any kind. I bought a bunch of strawberries from Costco, but Emily didn't like them as much as I thought she would, so I needed to figure out a way to use them all. Last night I made a strawberry daiquiri. Yummy, but didn't actually need many strawberries. So then I thought about adding strawberries to a cupcake, but that led to the muffin idea.

I like the way they look, with the crumbly top. And they taste good too. I was worried I cooked them too long, but they're nice and moist in the middle. I need to be careful - someone may get the impression that I'm domestic.

More cupcakes

Today I went to the Mothers Day Cupcake cooking class at Sur La Table. It was so fun. Here are my creations. A devils food cupcake with chocolate frosting decorated with "Oma" for Emily's grandma, a strawberry cupcake with strawberry buttercream, and a coconut cupcake with coconut frosting and a fondant bee. All yummy!
